Christmas Gifts for Grandma: How to Pick a Blanket That Says What You Mean

Kuda Atomic

Our purple Grandma blanket has a heart in the middle and "I love you Grandma" written inside it. Around that heart we printed the words: Supportive, Strong, Heart of Gold, Timeless Beauty, Guiding Light, Gentle Words of Wisdom, and more, with "Grateful for a Grandma like you" across the top. When we pick Christmas gifts for grandma, that list is the part we spend the most time on, because it is the card most of us mean to write and never do.

This guide is short on purpose. We are not going to hand you a list of 35 ideas. We make blankets, so we will tell you how to choose one for her, what to check before you order, and how to make a printed gift feel like it came from you.

The short answer

If your grandma... Pick Price
Likes a lot of words and reads every line Grandma Gift Blanket (Purple) $39.99
Prefers one clear message and a softer pattern Gifts for Grandma Blanket (Gray Flowers) $39.99
Already has "grandma" things everywhere Plain Throw Blanket (Gray) $39.99

Prices are what our store shows today. The full set of grandma designs lives in our I Love You Grandma collection, though not every color is in stock at the moment.

Christmas gifts for grandma: why a blanket works

We think the best Christmas gifts for grandma pass two tests: she uses it in January, and it reminds her of you while she does. A mug passes the first test. A framed photo passes the second. A blanket on the arm of her chair passes both. It also does not need batteries, an app, or a grandson on the phone explaining the settings.

There is also the practical side. Our blankets are 280 GSM microfleece, machine washable, and dyed into the fibers instead of printed on top, so the words do not sit on the surface like a sticker. That matters for something she will wash all winter.

Choosing the words

Here is where we would slow down.

The purple design is busy. It carries a long list of words and phrases, set in a script font around the heart, and the overall effect is closer to a long letter than a greeting card. Some grandmothers love that. They will trace the words with a finger and read them out to whoever is visiting, and they will tell you which one they think fits them best. Others find a lot of text hard to read, especially in script. If her eyesight is not what it was, or she has said before that she likes "clean" things, the long list may feel like clutter on her sofa. We would rather you know that now than in December. So picture where it will live. A blanket folded over a dark recliner shows a different amount of text than one spread on a bed.

The gray flowers design goes the other way. It says "I love you Grandma" inside a heart, surrounded by leaves and flowers in orange, cream and gray, and that is the whole message. We like it for grandmothers who decorate in warm, earthy colors, and for anyone who wants the message to land in one second instead of thirty. On a dark couch the heart and the words are the first thing you see from across the room.

If you cannot decide, ask yourself which she would rather receive: a letter or a hug.

What to check before you order

  • Shipping area. We ship free to the continental US. Alaska and Hawaii orders pay a flat standard rate, and we do not ship internationally, to military APO/FPO/DPO addresses, or to US territories. Our shipping policy has the details.
  • Timing. We do not publish holiday cutoff dates, so our honest advice is to order early in the season. Estimated delivery shows at checkout.
  • Stock. Some grandma colors sell out before December. If the one you want is unavailable, the two above were in stock when we wrote this.
  • Returns. You can request a return within 30 days of receiving the blanket, as long as it is unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. If you are giving it as a gift, keep the receipt handy.

How to make a printed blanket feel personal

Here is the plain version. Our blankets are not custom printed with names. We are upfront about that, because some shoppers search for personalized gifts and expect a name on the fleece. What we can do is give you a message that is already written well, and leave the personal part to you.

A few ideas we like:

  • Tuck a handwritten note inside the roll. One sentence about a specific memory beats a paragraph of general thanks.
  • Circle the word on the blanket that fits her best and tell her why in your card. "Guiding Light, because you drove me to every practice for six years" is a gift on its own.
  • Have the grandkids each pick a word and say it out loud when she opens it.

We wrote more about card messages and what to say in our post on heartfelt Christmas cards if you want help with the note.

When a plain blanket is the better gift

Some grandmothers have a shelf of "World's Best Grandma" items already. For them we would skip the message and send the Plain Throw Blanket in Gray or Purple, with the words in your card instead. Same fleece, same weight, less sentiment on the couch.

Nobody has ever complained that a blanket was too plain.

Gifts for the rest of the family

If you are shopping for more than one person, our Wife Gift Blanket (Merlot Red) and Aunt Gift Blanket (Purple) follow the same idea: a heart in the middle and a long list of words around it. If your wife is on the list too, our guide to Christmas gifts for wife walks through her blanket.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Christmas gift for grandma who has everything?

Something she will use daily that carries a message from you. We suggest a soft throw blanket with a few words that fit her, plus a handwritten note. If she already owns plenty of "grandma" items, choose a plain blanket and put the words in your card.

Are ButterTree grandma blankets personalized with names?

No. The designs are pre-printed with messages such as "I love you Grandma" and "Grateful for a Grandma like you." We do not print custom names.

How big and warm are the blankets?

They are made from 280 GSM microfleece, which is lightweight and breathable but cozy enough for winter evenings on the couch. They are machine washable.

Will the words fade in the wash?

We use a dye process that blends the color into the fibers instead of a digital print on the surface, which is designed to keep the design from fading or bleeding.

When should I order for Christmas delivery?

We do not publish holiday cutoff dates, so order early in the season. Estimated delivery times appear at checkout, and you will get a tracking number by email once your order ships.

Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii or overseas?

We ship to Alaska and Hawaii for a flat standard shipping fee. We do not ship internationally, to military APO/FPO/DPO addresses, or to US territories.
